Teach Love and Caring to Pre-K Students: An SEL Lesson

Oh no, this lesson starts with a fight between the two recurring characters in the unit, Droid and Dude. Are they not following their Code of Conduct? They are following it incorrectly! But fear not, because in the story titled "Love and Caring," Mama Amore is here to save the day and teach them the true meaning of love and caring for one another.

This SEL lesson focuses on the next positive actions in the class’s Code of Conduct—love and caring. Its goal is to help the students learn what love means, how to show love, and who they can love. The students learn that love can be expressed in their thoughts, actions, and feelings.

To help themselves remember, the students participate in a memorable finger play about love and caring. Then, the teacher explains that loving and caring are positive actions that make a Happy Circle or a Positive Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle.

"While the experience of love can be unique for each individual, expressing it through positive thoughts and actions is always crucial. In forming relationships and interacting with others, love is an essential ingredient that nurtures and strengthens bonds."

After this, the pre-kindergartners celebrate their positive actions as the teacher reads the ICU messages from the ICU box. Finally, they mark the "Love" column on their Positive Behavior Chart as a promise to always treat others with love and caring.

For this lesson, the "Droid," “Dude,” and “Mama Amore” visual aids are displayed. The positive side of the “Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle” poster and the Positive Behavior Chart are also displayed. The class ends with lots of love in the air!

Love is a shapeshifter, taking on various forms and expressions. For pre-kindergartners, it can be manifested in positive actions such as helping their parents with a chore, sharing a toy or a snack with a lonely classmate on the playground, or participating in a class discussion with the teacher.

While the experience of love can be unique for each individual, expressing it through positive thoughts and actions is always crucial. In forming relationships and interacting with others, love is an essential ingredient that nurtures and strengthens bonds.

In this lesson, pre-kindergartners learn how to show love and caring as a way to treat others and get along with them. This is an important lesson that helps them develop their relationship skills, which is one of the five core competencies of social-emotional learning.
