Effective SEL Lesson to Help Pre-K Students Manage Themselves

Self-management is fun! It keeps the pre-kindergartners in the Happy Circle, feeling like a Bright Sider. Can they still remember what a Happy Circle is? Of course, they can! They have been improving their intellectual health by doing the positive action of improving their memory. Here, the students use their great memory to remember the Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle, and apply it to self-management!

In this review lesson, the students look back on the Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle and learn how it applies to self-management. The teacher displays the "Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle" poster and helps them remember how the Circle works.

"The goal of this lesson is to help pre-kindergartners develop independence and grow resilient by learning to manage every aspect of themselves—their thoughts, actions, and feelings."

To guide the students in applying this to self-management, the teacher reminds them that their thoughts lead to actions, and those actions lead to feelings which lead to more thoughts. They learn that they need to keep thinking and acting positively to do self-management and feel positive about themselves.

The whole class sings and dances along to the Positive Action songs titled, "Thoughts-Actions-Feelings" and “Managing Me!” The optimistic and energetic beats and lyrics of the songs help the students remember the lesson concepts while having fun. They end the lesson by doing a reinforcement activity about having positive thoughts and doing positive actions. The students learn that keeping a Happy Circle helps them manage themselves. It also helps them feel good about themselves!

Resilience, empowerment, and satisfaction are among the positive outcomes of mastering self-management. By harnessing this skill, one can gain mastery over their own mind and body, which is invaluable for living life healthily, happily, and successfully.

The goal of this lesson is to help pre-kindergartners develop independence and grow resilient by learning to manage every aspect of themselves—their thoughts, actions, and feelings. Using the Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle of Positive Action, pre-kindergartners better understand the process that leads to their choices and behavior. This allows them to assess and find what they need to regulate in themselves.
