How to Manage Yourself By Choosing Positive Actions: Pre-K SEL Lesson

Self-management is the key to living a life of independence and productivity. When one has control over their resources, they are free of stress and worries. Others also trust them, as they are reliable, trustworthy, and disciplined. Hence, they need little to no supervision and can take charge of their lives.

Anyone can manage themselves, as long as they remember what self-management is really about—having a choice and choosing the positive over negative choice.

This lesson opens with a puppet play featuring hedgehog puppets, Squeak and Mimi. Here, Squeak and Mimi are not on good terms! They begin this lesson arguing because Mimi is trying to tell Squeak what to do. She thinks that if she doesn’t manage Squeak’s actions, he will be in trouble. Squeak doesn’t like this and he argues that he knows how to manage himself. From this situation, the pre-kindergartners learn that there is a better way than having others tell them what to do—it’s self-management!

"Anyone can manage themselves, as long as they remember what self-management is really about—having a choice and choosing the positive over negative choice."

After catching the students’ attention, this lesson explains the concept and practice of self-management through a class discussion. It defines self-management as choosing the positive choice to think, act, and feel positively.

To help them understand the application of self-management, the students participate in a mental exercise that allows them to identify positive choices for self-management. Through visual aids, their friends Emily and Luis join them to make the exercise more immersive. The students enjoy spending time with their old friends and learning self-management. In the end, they all cheer, one by one, to affirm that they can manage themselves!

Self-management is a crucial skill for personal, academic, and professional success. It involves problem-solving, decision-making, and self-discipline, which are essential for success in life. By teaching pre-kindergartners how to manage themselves, they learn how to take responsibility for their actions, which leads to the development of a growth mindset and improvement in behavior and intellectual abilities.
