How Can Pre-K Students Improve Their Strengths and Weaknesses

Kayla, Mai, and Mr. Jazzman are having a great day in the story "Doing Special Things." They are in the park, doing what they are good at. They are honest about their strengths and feel positive about themselves. The pre-kindergarten students immerse themselves better in the story using the “Kayla,” “Mai,” and “Mr. Jazzman” visual aids.

The goal of this SEL lesson is to reinforce to the students the positive action of telling themselves the truth by recognizing their strengths and weaknesses. The lesson uses an interactive class discussion, positive reinforcement, and a progress chart to achieve this goal.

"As pre-kindergartners explore their world and discover the truth about their strengths and weaknesses, they understand themselves better. They begin to recognize what makes them happy, which areas they excel in, and which areas need improvement."

The class discussion elaborates on why recognizing strengths and weaknesses is important for self-honesty. Then, the students celebrate their strengths through a simple exercise that allows them to demonstrate what they do well.

After that, the teacher opens the ICU box and reads the ICU messages as a positive reinforcement that doing positive actions is one of the students’ strengths. Finally, the students promise to practice self-honesty by being truthful about their strengths and weaknesses; then they mark their Positive Behavior Chart.

As pre-kindergartners explore their world and discover the truth about their strengths and weaknesses, they understand themselves better. They begin to recognize what makes them happy, which areas they excel in, and which areas need improvement. Armed with this knowledge, they make informed decisions, empower themselves, and reinforce their abilities.

To help pre-kindergartners practice self-honesty about their strengths and weaknesses, this lesson reinforces to students the value of being truthful to themselves for their improvement. It uses effective teaching strategies that ensure pre-kindergartners remain attentive and motivated to learn.
