What Are Personal Resources and Why Do They Matter for Kindergarten?

Every individual is unique in terms of talents, strengths, and capabilities. Still, all possess the same personal resources that provide them with equal chances to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. One resource, for example, is time, which offers many opportunities to learn, correct mistakes, and gather experiences. Similarly, energy is an essential resource for performing tasks and achieving progress. It is invaluable to master how to effectively use these resources to multiply opportunities for success and prevent them from running out too quickly.

The first step to proper management of these resources is awareness. By understanding what is available, one can prioritize and be efficient. In this lesson, kindergarten students become aware of their gifts and why they matter for personal and academic success.

"This lesson sets the stage for future lessons that delve deeper into understanding and harnessing personal resources, equipping kindergartners with the tools to navigate challenges, pursue their goals, and thrive in their educational journey and beyond."

Through a puppet play, this lesson commences and engages students on what to expect for the next lessons. Afterward, an insightful class discussion follows, focusing on the special gifts that every individual has. The teacher elaborates that a gift is a valuable thing that can be given or received; it does not always come from other people and it is not necessarily a material thing. For example, every person is gifted with the ability to think at birth, which they can develop and improve later.

Possessing and using a gift are two different things. In the continuation of the class discussion, the teacher differentiates that, while thinking is a gift, learning to think critically and understanding new things is a wise use of it. There are many more gifts aside from the ability to think, and in the upcoming lessons, kindergarten students will learn how to properly use and manage them.

Following the class discussion is an SEL activity. Students receive a piece of paper where they can draw a gift they wish to have. At the end of the lesson, they present each gift and explain what they can do to take good care of it.

As these young learners participate in the drawing activity and reflect on their gifts, they gain insight into the responsibility they hold in caring for and utilizing their resources. This lesson sets the stage for future lessons that delve deeper into understanding and harnessing personal resources, equipping kindergartners with the tools to navigate challenges, pursue their goals, and thrive in their educational journey and beyond.
