Teach Children Self-Honesty and Make Honest Decisions

Decisions affect various aspects of a person's life, including physical health, intellectual growth, social interactions, and emotional balance. This is why it is crucial to instill constructive and responsible decision-making skills in children as early as kindergarten.

Responsible decision-making is one of the five core competencies of social-emotional learning. Positive Action defines it as the ability to make ethical choices that benefit oneself and the community. With this skill, children develop social awareness—an ability that allows them to understand the impact of their choices on themselves and others.

At the heart of responsible decision-making is a powerful principle that guides wise choices: self-honesty. In this evidence-based SEL lesson, kindergarten students learn that telling themselves the truth enables them to weigh realistic options and make honest decisions.

An engaging audio story, "A Rocky Decision," introduces this lesson and illustrates how self-honesty facilitates responsible decision-making. The story follows lovable animal characters sailing on a boat across Lake Self-Honesty. A friendly, wise, and honest sea serpent named Sadie has guided the animals on their journey. However, the time for them to part ways has come.

The animals feel sad about the news, but Sadie assures them of a safe voyage as long as they remember to be honest about themselves. Soon after, the animals find a shore to land on. Due to their excitement and eagerness, they trick themselves into believing that the landing places are safe even when they are not. Fortunately, they are always honest and admit their mistakes.

The story ends with the animals finally choosing a beautiful beach to land on, showcasing their responsible decision-making. Their honesty about themselves and their options leads to a well-considered and successful outcome.

Following the story is an SEL activity that engages students in critical thinking and problem-solving. The teacher presents them with a situation to analyze. Students consider the problem and practice honesty and empathy to offer solutions. Afterward, the lesson ends with students recognizing how valuable the input of self-honesty is in making impactful decisions.
