Self-Honesty as the Best Policy for Upholding Moral Values

Hooray for kindergarten students!

They have successfully learned the different positive actions to practice self-honesty. Now, they can see themselves as they are and work toward self-improvement.

In this evidence-based SEL lesson, kindergarten students prepare to exit Positive Action Unit 5 and move on to their social-emotional learning journey. Picks-It Raccoon and Nix-It Panda puppets help ensure their readiness by reiterating that telling themselves the truth is the best policy for self-improvement and healthy relationships.

After an engaging class discussion with the beloved puppets, kindergarten students test their understanding of the lesson concepts. They participate in a question-and-answer exercise that reviews the valuable lessons they have encountered in this unit.

During the exercise, kindergarten students can look back on their adventures and remember the inspirational people they have met. First, they recite the four rules of self-honesty, then reflect on the stories of their favorite animal characters.

"Following the class review is a discussion on the importance of self-awareness and self-honesty in improving oneself, upholding moral values, and maintaining healthy relationships."

Afterward, they look up to Glen Cunningham and remind themselves not to fixate on the negative. Instead, they should tell themselves the truth and remain grounded in reality that offers other viable options in life.

Following the class review is a discussion on the importance of self-awareness and self-honesty in improving oneself, upholding moral values, and maintaining healthy relationships. During this discussion, students open up about the significance of knowing their strengths and weaknesses for embracing their true selves. After that, they end the lesson by completing an activity sheet that reinforces the positive action of learning about strengths and weaknesses.

Kindergarten students can expect multiple benefits from learning this lesson. Firstly, they will experience a sense of achievement as they retain new knowledge and make remarkable progress in learning more about themselves. Moreover, this positive feeling will foster a greater appreciation for doing positive actions. This will encourage them to behave positively toward themselves and others. Ultimately, they will develop three core social-emotional learning competencies: self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making.
