The journey to self-improvement is no walk in the park; it is a demanding and uphill climb. Those who take on the path to the summit are pushed out of their comfort zones, faced with new challenges, and brought to uncharted territories.
However formidable the climb to self-improvement may be, it remains the only path to a purposeful and fulfilling existence. The journey encourages people to test their limits, as they have more potential than they use and recognize.
In this evidence-based SEL lesson, kindergarten students begin to test themselves and push their limits. After their successful voyage across Lake Self-Honesty, where they discover their strengths and weaknesses, they are now ready to climb Mount Self-Improvement. This mountainous challenge is their final test, and it will reveal to them their better selves.
The lesson commences with two lovable puppets, Picks-It Raccoon and Nix-It Panda, engaging students in a fun puppet show. The two puppets arrive at the foot of Mount Self-Improvement. Picks-It tells Nix-It that the mount is his final challenge. The panda must climb it and reach the undeniably proud peak.
Nix-It hikes all day and night, constantly thinking about his strengths and ability to accomplish the challenge. Every day, the mountain turns out to be higher than yesterday, and his progress does not always seem significant. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion that the climb puts him through, Nix-It always reminds himself to push his limits.
"However formidable the climb to self-improvement may be, it remains the only path to a purposeful and fulfilling existence. The journey encourages people to test their limits, as they have more potential than they use and recognize."
The climb is full of challenges. Nix-It has to conquer a tall boulder, search for tools, set out camp, and ask for help from a friend he encounters in the mountain. In every undeniably discouraging obstacle, Nix-It builds up the courage to try, believes in his potential, turns problems into opportunities, and persists through every challenge. Not long after, he sees a strange shadow reaching out to him. It is Picks-It, waiting for his arrival at the top.
Following this compelling puppet play is a class discussion on the positive actions to improve oneself. Kindergarten students learn that Nix-It has shown these during his climb to the mountaintop. He exhibits the courage to try by taking on the challenge and believes in his potential by conquering obstacles. Despite the inconveniences that hinder his journey, he finds a chance to turn problems into opportunities and persists through them.
The secret to practicing these positive actions is a positive mindset. With optimistic thinking and a can-do attitude, kindergarten students can take on new challenges, overcome discouragement, and believe in themselves.
This lesson marks the beginning of Positive Action Unit 6, which focuses on teaching kindergarten students how to set short- and long-term goals and achieve them. Its objective is to motivate children to improve beyond their classrooms and instill a positive attitude toward learning.
Promoting self-improvement to children cultivates a love for learning, which motivates them to strive for success and betterment. It also develops their social skills as they learn to ask for help and appreciate the value of healthy social interactions. Finally, promoting self-improvement nurtures children’s emotional well-being by enhancing their emotional intelligence, which is the ability to manage and understand emotions. As they encounter challenges, they learn to navigate feelings of sadness, anger, and discouragement healthily and constructively.
