Children are like seeds planted in the earth and blossom into strong, healthy adults. But much like a plant that wilts without sunlight and rain, children cannot thrive without social support and connections. For this reason, they must learn how to build meaningful relationships with others.
Healthy relationships nourish children’s mental health and emotional well-being with love, care, and acceptance. Through these connections, children can grow from seeds into a flourishing garden.
In this kindergarten lesson, the young students learn how to have positive interactions and long-lasting connections with others by developing essential social skills, including communication strategies and conflict resolution skills. This lesson marks the beginning of Positive Action Unit 4 and continues the students’ social-emotional learning adventure in the Kingdom of Positive Action. In this continuation, kindergartners arrive at the Getting Along with Others Island, where they hear new stories, make new memories, and meet new characters.
The students’ beloved puppets, Picks-It Raccoon and Nix-It Panda, join them in this adventure. Through an engaging puppet play and an interesting challenge, Picks-It and Nix-It introduce students to the lesson. Picks-It tests Nix-It as they arrive at their destination, just as he did in the previous units. For his test, Nix-It must climb a high hill and then pass through a dark cave with only one exit.
"Healthy relationships nourish children’s mental health and emotional well-being with love, care, and acceptance. Through these connections, children can grow from seeds into a flourishing garden."
The young panda accepts the challenge, confident in his strength and bravery. True to his belief, Nix-It successfully climbs the hill and ventures into the dark cave. However, an unexpected twist occurs—a snake suddenly appears before him. The snake, known as Pythor, desperately calls Nix-It for help as he is trapped under a heavy rock and unable to escape. Will Nix-It abandon the snake who might betray him and possibly jeopardize his test, or should he extend compassion to the helpless snake?
What is the lesson of the puppet play? During the class discussion that ensues after, it is emphasized that true strength does not only lie in physical and intellectual strength. It is also in treating others with kindness, compassion, and empathy. The students then exchange ideas and reflect on the significance of Nix-It's moral dilemma. They learn that helping others, even in uncertain circumstances, is a testament to one's inner strength and positive development.
Throughout this unit, kindergartners will spend their learning journey on an island that comes to life through a mural poster. During their stay, they will learn the value of healthy social interactions and social-emotional development. As students encounter various activities, immersive stories, and fun characters, they will discover specific positive actions that can help them develop invaluable relationship skills, one of the five core social-emotional learning competencies.
