Life is only meaningful when lived positively. That is why it is crucial to invest in physical and mental health, as both are the cornerstones of a fulfilling life. A healthy body and mind allow one to pursue goals, nurture self-love, and contribute positively to the community.
Establishing healthy habits and engaging in positive actions make achieving physical and intellectual development possible. In this evidence-based health education lesson, which marks the end of Positive Action Unit 2, kindergarten students reflect on the healthy practices they have learned to improve their bodies and minds.
"By embracing healthy habits, nurturing self-love, and pursuing knowledge, kindergartners choose the path to a lifetime of happiness and guaranteed success."
The lesson starts with a stimulating SEL activity. Using the students’ "Self-Concept Signals," kindergarten students answer whether they agree or disagree with the statements read by the teacher. For example, they show the “Sad Face” side of their signal when they disagree with a statement such as, “It’s a bad thing to be curious.” They raise the “Happy Face” side of the signal when they agree to a statement such as, “Finding answers to questions is called ‘gaining information.’”
After the simple yet fun activity, students listen to an engaging puppet show featuring their beloved characters, Picks-It Raccoon and Nix-It Panda. In the play, the puppets congratulate the kindergarten students and reward them with their keys to the Land of Intellectual. To end the lesson, students accept and color their keys, which they compile in their key rings. As these young learners hold their keys, they possess the power to unlock a world of possibilities.
Throughout this curriculum, every time students finish a unit, they receive keys, which can help them open Castle Self-Concept at the end of the year.
This effective lesson helps students understand that a healthy body and mind are essential for a life filled with purpose and joy. By embracing healthy habits, nurturing self-love, and pursuing knowledge, kindergartners choose the path to a lifetime of happiness and guaranteed success.
