Climbing the mountain of self-improvement is a transformative journey. In this adventure, individuals strengthen their abilities and discover better versions of themselves as they overcome challenges. Upon reaching the summit, they achieve a sense of victory.
The positive feeling of reaching the top and conquering obstacles is not the only reward, however. Beyond the peak, there lies something even more breathtaking—the stunning view of countless possibilities.
Kindergarten students admire this view in this evidence-based SEL lesson, which marks the end of Unit 6. Here, they look ahead to new horizons and more learning opportunities after celebrating their success in learning all Positive Action concepts. Their beloved puppets, Picks-It and Nix-It, congratulate their accomplishments in this learning journey.
The celebration begins with a continuation of the story featuring their favorite jungle and forest animal characters. The animals have reached the top of Mount Self-Improvement and are preparing to leave. But first, they take in the amazing view from the summit, and while doing so, they remember something important.
"The positive feeling of reaching the top and conquering obstacles is not the only reward, however. Beyond the peak, there lies something even more breathtaking—the stunning view of countless possibilities."
In Positive Action's Unit 2, their robot friend, Positron of Planet Intellectia, leaves them a gift and hides it in the mountain. The animals search the mountaintop with glee and excitement. Abbott Rabbit finds the box and opens it with his friends from the jungle and the forest.
The classroom comes alive and cheers as the teacher pulls out a gift box. Students are excited and grateful that Positron also leaves them a gift as a reward for their hard work. Inside the box are certificates of completion filled with students’ names and stickers that say "I Made It."
One by one, the students come up to receive their certificates and stickers. For the rest of the day, they wear the stickers proudly, like a badge, reminding themselves and informing others of their great success and self-improvement.
The lesson ends with rest and congratulations, like the animal protagonists who enjoy the view of their hard work. During this time, students talk with their peers and reflect on their positive actions to reach this achievement.
Using positive reinforcement, such as uplifting language, rewards, and recognition, this celebratory lesson accomplishes a crucial goal: to nurture students’ intrinsic motivation to make positive choices consistently.
Recognizing students’ positive actions makes them feel appreciated and contributes to their positive self-concept. Associating their positive feelings with positive actions fuels their motivation, determination, and intention to keep a positive mindset and act positively in every situation.
