6 Positive Actions for a Healthy Mind: A Review Lesson for Grade 1 Students

With the global decline of mental health in younger generations, it is more important than ever for schools to include Positive Action lessons that promote a sound mind and a healthy brain among students in their learning resource toolkits. The second unit of this evidence-based SEL program is specifically designed to help students thrive mentally by introducing intellectual positive actions.

In grade 1, students dive headfirst into a world of curiosity, creativity, and learning. They learn and practice how to make good decisions, solve problems, and strengthen their memory – all while building a strong, positive self-concept. They also engage in fun SEL activities that help them process and internalize the lessons, such as storytelling, singing, and drawing.

Now, it’s time to test their understanding of the unit concepts. In this review lesson, grade 1 students are presented with a series of yes or no questions that revolve around the intellectual positive actions mentioned above. After the quiz, the teacher delves into each item to ensure that all students grasp the correct answers.

"In grade 1, students dive headfirst into a world of curiosity, creativity, and learning. They learn and practice how to make good decisions, solve problems, and strengthen their memory – all while building a strong, positive self-concept."

The teacher then distributes an activity sheet with coloring and fill-in-the-blank sections. This sheet provides a creative outlet for the students to express their newfound knowledge and solidify the unit concepts in their minds. As they complete the task, they realize that learning doesn't have to be a tedious chore – it can be an enjoyable experience that sparks their imagination and encourages their curiosity.

As a culminating activity, the class sings along to the song "Learning to Learn." This memorable tune serves as a reminder to students that learning is a continuous process and that they should always strive to improve themselves by doing intellectual positive actions. It's a moment of pure joy and inspiration as the students reflect on their growth and progress throughout the unit.

The completion of unit 2 marks a crucial milestone for the students. With the new tools and resources at their disposal, they are now equipped to take on the world with a newfound sense of mental fortitude and personal empowerment. Not only have they learned that taking care of their mental health is just as important as their physical well-being, but they have also discovered how to achieve balance in their lives, cultivate healthy habits, and develop a positive mindset.
