Managing Oneself with Positive Actions: A Review Lesson for Grade 1 Students

Self-management is a crucial skill that empowers individuals to take control of eight personal resources: time, energy, money, possessions, talents, thoughts, actions, and feelings. Recognizing its significance, Positive Action's SEL curriculum dedicates one unit to cultivating this competency among grade 1 students.

In this review lesson, the students demonstrate their understanding of unit concepts through an engaging SEL activity. They answer ten yes-or-no thought-provoking questions related to self-management. This exercise allows students to reflect on their learning and assess their understanding. However, the value of this activity extends beyond individual assessments.

The class thoroughly discusses each question, ensuring that everyone comprehends the reasoning behind the correct answers. This group dialogue promotes collaboration, fosters critical thinking skills, and reinforces the importance of clear communication. Through this collective exploration, first-grade students strengthen their grasp of self-management principles.

As this review lesson progresses, the classroom is enthralled by the appearance of Maurice the Mouse. Maurice narrates his adventurous journey with his cousin Marrott in search of the greatest treasure of all. Although unsuccessful in their quest, their time spent at Elena's house has taught them and the grade 1 students invaluable lessons about self-management. Now, they shall continue their search, all while thinking, acting, and feeling more positive!

This review lesson concludes with a celebration of the students' progress and accomplishments. The class gathers together to sing Positive Action songs, highlighting the positive atmosphere that has been nurtured throughout the unit. These uplifting melodies reinforce the importance of self-management and serve as a reminder of the skills the students have developed.

As the grade 1 students join the joyful chorus, it becomes evident they are now well on their way to becoming successful self-managers! *Positive Action’*s Unit 3 has equipped these young learners with the necessary skills and tools to navigate different situations, make responsible choices, and build positive relationships.
