How to Manage Oneself: A Review Lesson for Grade 1 Students

Grade 1 students have made remarkable progress in their understanding of managing emotions. Throughout *Positive Actio*n’s Unit 3, they have diligently worked on incorporating positive actions into their daily lives, as reflected in their completion of all eight items on the Positive Behavior Chart. In this review lesson, the students embark on a journey to reinforce their newfound knowledge and skills, guided by their enthusiastic teacher.

To begin the lesson, the students discuss the Happy Circle that resulted from doing a positive action for someone in their families in the previous class. The teacher encourages the students to reflect on how they felt after completing a positive action, reinforcing the idea that these actions can make them feel good, as well as make other people happy.

"Grade 1 students have made significant strides in their emotional intelligence journey. Through completing eight positive actions in the Positive Behavior Chart and this comprehensive review lesson, they have not only mastered positive actions but also developed a greater understanding of managing their emotions."

Next, the teacher employs two visual aids — the "Birthday" poster and the "Stop, Choose, Go" poster — to reinforce four key lessons of the unit. First, it is emphasized that feeling good about oneself entails meeting one’s physical, intellectual, and emotional needs. Taking care of oneself not only contributes to one’s overall happiness but also enables one to extend kindness and support to others.

Second, individuals can opt for positive actions over negative ones. By consciously making this choice, students can foster a harmonious environment and build stronger relationships with their peers and loved ones.

Third, everyone possesses eight valuable gifts or resources: time, energy, money, possessions, talents, thoughts, actions, and feelings. These gifts can be managed wisely by using positive actions.

Lastly, there is a vast range of emotions that everyone experiences, including love, anger, worry, jealousy, pride, fear, loneliness, thankfulness, and discouragement. It is normal to feel such emotions, but it is important to choose to respond to them positively.

To consolidate their understanding of the unit's lessons, the teacher distributes an activity sheet. Here, students can apply what they have learned and further internalize self-management concepts.

Grade 1 students have made significant strides in their emotional intelligence journey. Through completing eight positive actions in the Positive Behavior Chart and this comprehensive review lesson, they have not only mastered positive actions but also developed a greater understanding of managing their emotions. One more lesson remains in this journey, and with the support of their teacher, Grade 1 students are sure to sail through it!
