Food Groups and Balanced Diet: A Lesson for Grade 1 Students

Davey Doddle is back with another exciting health education lesson for grade 1 students. In his previous adventure, Davey learned the importance of caring for his car. This time, he is driving along the Road to Good Health when he spots a friendly family having a picnic. The Wright Family invites Davey to join them for lunch, and that’s when Davey discovers that the family has been eating wrong.

Each member of the Wright Family only eats from one food group, and Davey knows this is not a healthy practice. He explains to the family that to be healthy, they must eat from all the food groups daily. The Wrights immediately trade plates, excited to try various foods.

"By eating a variety of healthy food, individuals can ensure they are getting all the nutrients their bodies need to function properly."

Eating a balanced diet is essential for maintaining good health. Davey teaches the Wrights about five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. By eating a variety of healthy food, individuals can ensure they are getting all the nutrients their bodies need to function properly.

The lesson continues with the teacher encouraging the students to think of positive thoughts, actions, and feelings related to healthy eating. Grade 1 students are reminded that each individual has only one body, and it is vital to take positive actions to keep it healthy.

This evidence-based SEL lesson serves as a reminder that developing healthy eating habits from an early age is crucial. Parents and teachers can play a vital role in educating children about the importance of a balanced diet and promoting healthy eating practices. Encouraging children to explore different food groups and make healthier food choices can go a long way in ensuring a healthy lifestyle.
